La Cala Hotel & Golf Resort is the biggest golf complex in Spain. With fifty-four holes of top class golf, the five star La Cala Golf Hotel and world renowned David Leadbetter Golf Academy really make this course a golfers dream. The three courses offer a test of golf for everyone and although tricky in places it provides a fair game of golf. Maintained to the highest of standards, all levels of golfer will find these courses enjoyable and very rewarding. Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Golf Resort are all very different in character. The new (Europa) course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and neither is over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.”
Asia Course La Cala’s Asia golf course has stood the test of time been a favourite with visitors to the Costa de Sol since it opened over 15 years ago. La Cala’s first golf course offers a relatively short test of golf with the premium on accuracy. Both the fairways and smallish greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. Water is present on only two holes, the reachable par 5 fifth and the short par 4 twelfth. Approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over native scrub land, all are easily reachable.
America Course The second golf course at La Cala is the America golf course, opened shortly after first, the America course is some 250 metres longer and carries a par of 73. The hilly topography is similar to Asia course and did not lend itself to the creation of any water holes. The features of this golf course are the risk and reward tee shot that are presented, with carries across steep valleys and scrub land more than making up for the lack of water. Although challenging, the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course than the Asia. Two, perhaps three, of the par 5s are reachable in two shots (holes 1, 9 and 15), and the par 3s are equally spectacular to those on Asia course.
Europa Course The latest edition to the La Cala Resort is the Europa golf course, which was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens larger than on the existing courses, although not as severely contoured but in keeping with the La Cala design, well bunkered. The Ojen River plays a major part in the golf course design, coming in to play on eight of the holes and cutting across three fairways. The 14th is by far the toughest hole on the course, at the maximum limit of what is allowed for a par 3 at 233 metres with water right and danger left. The par 5, 11th is the longest hole on the golf course measuring a huge 524 metres with danger lurking tight left all the way. This course is certainly a most play for all golfers and off the back tees it’s a real test of golf for the low handicappers.
