In 1966 Penina Golf Course became the birth place of golf within the Algarve and this course set the ball rolling in this corner of Portugal, as many soon followed their lead. Sir Henry Cotton’s timeless design has been tested to the full over the years having hosted numerous international professional tournaments, including the prestigious Portuguese Algarve Open which has taken place here on no less than eight occasions. Spread across a 360 acre estate this championship golf course is very reminiscent of a traditional English parkland course with almost four thousand trees within the grounds, many of which edge the fairways. As with all the classic golf courses, each hole tells you exactly what is required. Numerous lakes and streams are in play along with many beautifully contoured bunkers which shield the large plateau greens, offering a real treat for any golfer regardless of their ability.
