The weather couldn’t have been better for the Sala Group Summer Golf Classic at the Marbella Club Golf Resort on Friday June the 8th, even if the wind did get up a little later in the day. However this didn’t spoil the enjoyment of all the competitors, many of whom hadn’t played the course before, and we had the best turnout yet with almost 100 players taking part.
Instead of the usual shotgun start, this competition worked off consecutive tee times, with the early birds teeing off at 08.12, and then one team virtually every 12 minutes through until 13.24 when the last team set off on their adventure!
Following the demanding but fair challenge of the beautifully contoured fairways of this hidden gem on the Costa del Sol, it was the team, Los Banditos, comprising Nicolas Cole, Johnny Lyons, David Mond and Charlie Walton (pictured above) that emerged victorious, with a magnificent score of 86. Just one point behind in second place for the second consecutive time, with 85 points, were the Aloha Rebels team. In third with a very creditable 82 points came The Boro Boys, who just pipped Sala Beach’s Team 2 on count back.
After the day’s golf, it was back to La Sala Bar & Restaurant, where the now familiar wonderful show of hospitality by the tournament sponsors was enjoyed by all, with the prize-giving taking place around 7pm.
The winners received a voucher for dinner for the team at La Sala, together with a bottle of bubbly, whilst the runners-up received a voucher for lunch for the team at La Sala. With the team in 3rd place receiving a bottle of bubbly for their efforts.
As the ladies had been monopolising the longest drive prizes in previous tournaments, this time there were separate prizes for ladies and gents on the 17th. The prize for the ladies’ longest drive was won “yet again” by the irrepressible Lynne Hood, whilst Stephen Carr won the gents prize. Nicky Masters managed to scoop the prize for nearest the pin on the 2nd, with David Manassa claiming the prize for nearest the pin on the 9th. These 4 prize winners received a pair of the very latest Ecco golf shoes, for which we have to thank the sponsorship of Simply Shuttles, Stein Personal & Corporate Planners, the Trusted Trades Association, Direct Property Investments, Marbella Property Management & Marbella Chiropractic.
Thanks to the generosity of all the competitors, and in particular David Bentley the footballer, over 600 euros was raised for the charity we support, Debra, the Butterfly Skin Children’s Association. More information on this wonderful organisation can be found at www.debra.es
Many of the competitors were later seen enjoying the delights of the Sala Beach White & Gold opening party, which nicely coincided with the tournament!
Everyone is now eagerly looking forward to the next Sala Group Golf Classic taking place at La Quinta Golf Club on Saturday the 7th of July. This tournament returns to the standard 9.00 am shotgun start format, so book your team in early to ensure you don’t miss out!
